What Would Jeff Do? Dog Training Tip of the Day #25
Can I let my dog up on the furniture or the bed?
I am not against letting dogs up on furniture or the bed, keep in mind that it is one of the best rewards you can give a dog , but it also can reinforce and lead to some pretty unwanted and aggressive behaviors. Always keep in mind that if love and affection is way more then structure, leadership, obedience work, and consequences for dangerous behavior or for even breaking or not doing a known command then you are probably going to struggle.
So as far as dogs being up on the furniture and/or in bed with you.
Aggressive dogs- NEVER
Separation Anxiety Dogs- I highly suggest not
Pushy snotty dogs-only with permission on and make it mandatory that they get off in a split second when you tell them to
Fearful/Nervous Dogs- same as above
If you are fortunate to have one of those dogs that is so well behaved (not trained but behaved, there is a difference) and you never have a problem with your dog at all and your dog is safe with dogs and people, no anxiety, no pushiness or snottiness..you can do what you want, just be careful if any of that freedom leads to any of the unwanted behaviors that I mentioned.
